kyphosis whales are thefarthesttraveling mammals on the major planet ,   up to of journeyingsome 3,000 miles a yearas part of their annual migration . But all that swimming sure can wash up a whale out .

research worker Kieran Bown ofPangaMXwas on an expedition to the Caribbean Sea before this year when he and his grouping saw the tail end of a humpback whale sticking up off in the distance . At first , they feared that the motionless creature might be bruise or dead — but as they got closer , it became clear that the whale was actuallyjust dead tired .

“ The Humpback was good gone , vertically wind in the water with the fluke out of the water , ” writes Bown   in an email to The Dodo . “ With the heavyweight being so relaxed , the trematode had full flop over and was represent as a form of stabiliser [ sic ] at the Earth’s surface . The whale was wholly at peace in the water and remaining silent we float and observed getting a bully look at the behemoth . ”

Bown , equipped with a GoPro camera , decided to enter the pee to get a better look at the dozing whale . For about ten moment the kyphosis continued to only blow tail - over - nous without moving a brawniness until finally she woke up   to take a breath .

It was only then that the sleepyheaded heavyweight realized she was being look on .

“ The heavyweight was coming up to breathe , with a slight motion of the fluke and twisting her organic structure using the pectoral fivesome [ … ] she fetch her brain up mightily close to us as if to get a look at it , ” write Bown . “ I froze exactly where I was , I had never been border on by a whale before , only observed them as they swim by , it was as if she was checking us out . ”

But apparently the sight of a few little humans lingering around her was not enough to disturb her from roost a fiddling longer . After a few cryptic breaths at the aerofoil , the whale resumed her up - and - down position and presumably went back to eternal sleep .

“ It was an experience we would all never forget , ” writes Bown .

Whales typically log Z’s at dark , which lay down this a rarified face-off — thoughother remarkable footage has been captured of sperm giant napping too , and as a group , no less .

Unlike human and other non - aquatic mammals , respiration is not involuntary for heavyweight and dolphins . to keep from overwhelm as they sleep , these animalsshut off half their mastermind at a clock time , allowing them to return to the airfoil periodically to breathe .
