Why drop the effort messing around using a Wiimote - alike remote , or even shouting at the TV , to get it to change channel , when you’re able to just gaze at what you desire and blink to select ? Well , that’sHaier ’s theoryanyway , and , amazingly , it actually works .
OK , so oculus - tracking is nothing new – the armed forces has been doing it for ages in helicopter gunships and things – but to see itgenuinely go on a TVis pretty impressive . Well , I say on a telly , it ’s not like it ’s build right into the frame or anything . You ’ve got an eye - scanning box that sit passably closely in front of you , which surcharge into a computer to moderate the on - screen video display . It ’s for sure not the most commodious , practical or elegant solution , but hell , it ’s a showtime , and it ’s really just a prototype at this stage .
After calibration , watching a ball move across the screen while it traverse your eyes , you ’re in . You focus on something to foreground it and then nictate a duet of times in rapid succession to select it , moving through the menu . Navigating around by just looking at thing was amazingly intuitive ; you ’re going to look where you need to click anyway , I guess , so this just removes a layer of apparatus and effort require . depend at the bottom pop up your standard medium - dally barroom , with mass options and dally restraint . scrub , at least clicking and dragging , is a no - go though , but the repose works as you ’d have a bun in the oven .

In my fun with the thing , it was astonishingly exact , really ; at least as precise as a Wiimote pointer , which was fairly telling . The organization contend with those wear upon shabu , but what do you expect ?
It ’s not practical in any sense of the word , of course – what happens when you just look at a specific spot on your idiot box , like tracking overlap times while watching F1 for instance ? Still , it could be jolly awe-inspiring in combining with voice command . Here ’s hoping eye - trailing and Kinect blend to make channel surf even lazier than it already is .
Our newest offspring Gizmodo UK is gobbling up the word in a different timezone , so hold in them out if you need another Giz fix .
