The Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) will take its first step to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. airplanes . The promulgation , made on Wednesday , acknowledges it will take some time to implement these regulations .
The ‘ endangerment determination , ’ released by the Obama presidency , said it train " a preliminary but necessary first step to begin to cover greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sphere , the highest - emitting family of transferral author that the EPA has not yet call . "
The EPA will first wait for a spheric carbon dioxide emissions criterion to be developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ) before adopting any specific rule . ICAO is a UN agency that issues guidelines for the air power sphere . The emissions criterion is due to be released in February 2016 .
The study found that “ certain classes of engine used in aircraft contribute to the air defilement that have mood modification and endangers public wellness and wellbeing . ” The report also say that greenhouse gas emission from airplanes will increase by about 50 percent from 2010 to 2035 . The EPA is required to explicate rule and regulations , similar to the ones it did for cars and tycoon plant .
Christopher Grundler , film director of the EPA ’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality , toldTheNew York Times : “ Our No . 1 goal is to guarantee a meaningful outside standard . There are healthy environmental reasons to do so . An international policy would ensure far more greenhouse gas emission reduction than a domestic - only plan . ”
environmentalist remain skeptical on what real variety the EPA announcement will make . William Becker , executive director of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies , told theWashington Postthat the emission requisite might only practice to newer aircrafts .
“ The fear is that this will allow the law of continuation of erstwhile engines , because they can turn tail tougher requirements , and create a disincentive for any of these manufacturers to redesign their locomotive engine , ” he tot up .
Aircraft emission standards are unlikely to be finalized until after the Obama government end . The EPA will gather feedback on their datasets from stakeholders over the next six months .
