Earth ’s core is plain a chip leaky than scientists expect . In a novel studypublishedin Nature , researchers describe evidence that traces of precious metal from Earth ’s metallic heart , including ruthenium and gold , are seeping up into volcanic rocks on the surface .
The University of Göttingen - led team examined lava from Hawaii ’s volcanic islands and find an unusually high-pitched concentration of a rare isotope : ruthenium-100 , an isotope that ’s more common in Earth ’s magnetic core than in the rocky mantel . The isotope ’s presence suggested that the lava had somehow blame up textile from the planet ’s deepest layer — more than 1,800 miles ( 2,900 kilometers ) beneath your feet .
“ When the first results come in , we realized that we had literally struck Au , ” said Nils Messling , a geochemist at the University of Göttingen , in a universityrelease . “ Our data confirmed that material from the core , include Au and other precious metals , is leaking into the Earth ’s mantle above . ”

Earth ’s gist formed over 4 billion years ago and contains more than 99.999 % of the planet ’s gold supplying . But as Naturereported , previous survey indicated that some volcanic rock consisted of material from Earth ’s core , raising question about how the heck that textile got to the control surface .
Now , thanks to radical - high precision isotopic analysis developed by the Göttingen team , researchers were able-bodied to adjudicate previously undetectable conflict in ruthenium isotopes — an achievement that dial the team into the kinship between Earth ’s nerve center and its most volatile situation on the surface .
“ Our findings not only show that the Earth ’s pith is not as disjunct as antecedently assumed , ” said Professor Matthias Willbold , also of the University of Göttingen , “ We can now also test that huge volumes of super - het up mantle material – several hundreds of quadrillion measured tonnes of rock – originate at the nitty-gritty - chimneypiece boundary and rise to the Earth ’s surface to form sea islands like Hawaii . ”

The team ’s finding signal that Earth ’s supply of precious metals near the surface may owe some of its origination to this deep - seat reserve of molten rock-and-roll .
Studying other hot spot — think ofIceland , Japan , and other regions crammed with alive volcanoes — could clear up how much of the material brought to the surface originates from the boundary between Earth ’s essence and its mantel .
