For every 16 hours a prisoner pedal , he shaves a day off of his sentence .
Each evening , the charged batteries are taken to the urban center center , where they are used to power street luminosity . The voluntary programme seems to be a striking with the prisoners themselves ; the bikes relieve some of the ennui of prison , and keep the prisoner in pattern .
