Though the legend of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs developing the first Apple computing gadget in a service department at 2066 Crist Drive in Los Altos is certainly romantic , it did n’t exactly happen that way of life .
“ The service department is a mo of a myth , ” says Wozniak in anew interview with Bloomberg . “ It represents us better than anything else , but we did no designs there . We would drive the finished product to the service department , make them work on , and then drive them down to the store that paid us hard currency . ”
In fact , this is n’t the first time Wozniak has expose that minuscule myth . Here on Gizmodo , he report how thing really workedin the comment surgical incision of a post about the Apple-1 :

Actually , there was no designing nor structure of this computer in any service department . It was designed and built in my HP cubicle at nighttime and in my Cupertino apartment . The designs were conk out freely with no right of first publication observance so that others could build a useful computing machine at low price . Others even had hired man - make translation of this figurer before Steve Jobs even bang it existed . He came into townsfolk and I drag HIM to the Homebrew Computer Club where I bear witness off this figurer every meeting . Steve see the crowd gather around me and paint a picture that we create a PC board that could be manufactured for $ 20 and sell them for $ 40 as a company . We ’d been selling my playfulness machine for 5 geezerhood so this was just a formalization step . Steve Jobs did do the byplay end of getting the thing productized , but at first it was just to be a PC board alone , with no parts on it . When you have no money , you have no money , and you work from home . Paul Terrell of the Byte Shop believed in this market and he put up the money [ risk ] to build stocked with and go personal computer boards . But since we were showing the Apple ] [ privately before ever shipping an Apple I , it was to be a myopic term product . The Apple I was n’t designed to be a computer as much as qualify my hand - built terminal ( Arpanet days ) to be a computer .
We sold perchance 100 . Jobs did all the business , getting function , have sales , get promotional material , from his bedroom . The manufacturing was done in Santa Clara at the same place the PC boards were made . The service department had a workbench but was only really needed part of a day each week to fit out the boards and make trusted they worked .
Not only do you start in a home base when you are unseasoned with no money , but 7 of the first 10 Apple hoi polloi ( some , like Allen Baum , did fantastically help but were never employee directly ) went to Homestead High School .

But just because the Apple-1 was n’t designed there does n’t mean the garage is n’t part of Apple ’s history — in fact , it was made a “ historic resource ” by the The Los Altos Historical Commission last twelvemonth .
