Upon this gorgeous / creepy onslaught of visuals drapes a plot that ’s either tissue - thin or amazingly uninteresting , or both . In the time of year unfastener , “ Checking In , ” we come across homicide cop John Lowe , run by Wes Bentley , who moves into the hotel after he ’s tempt there by the disingenuously grim serial Orcinus orca he ’s tracking ( he also thinks he spotted his long - miss Word running through the hall ) . Probably , this will not be a fresh pick , but perhaps it will protect his married woman ( Chloe Sevigny ) and young daughter from tangling with any more iniquity than is necessary . Would n’t count on it , though , since Lowe takes up residence in Room 64 , a.k.a . the most sinister spot in the joint .
Already posted up inside the hotel : a glamourous woman who is by all appearances a lamia , play by Lady Gaga ( does n’t geezerhood , salute bloodline , collects minor , enjoys Nosferatu , boniface gory riot ) ; her boy plaything ( Matt Bomer ) , a sometime junkie whose female parent ( Kathy Bates ) now runs the Cortez ’s front desk and oversees its more unsavory activities ( “ I got ta go give that affair in Room 33 ” ) ; the needy , seemingly undead Sally ( Sarah Paulson ) , still clad in the Courtney Love - esque leopard coat she wears in flashback to 1994 ; and various other creature and beasties , including this guy , who lunges out of a grubby mattress in the opening move number :
So we get some Euro tourer and a heroin junkie who wander in and suffer an raiment of hideous portion — though even the monsters get a lilliputian nervous when the hotel ’s novel proprietor , fashion designer Drake ( Cheyenne Jackson ) , swan through to hold in out his investment funds . All the monsters , that is , except Lady Gaga ’s Countess , who ’s presumptively not move to have any problem staying on top of whatever post she chance herself in … even an legal ouster observance .
As much as Lady Gaga ’s front feels like stunt molding , she ’s the most promising thing Hotel has going for it , which is otherwise a little too delighted with slathering on violence for the saki of ferocity ( including a some Hannibal - esque nonplus stiff , and a genuinely worrisome rape scene ) . The hunt - a - serial - killer patch has been done a million times ; will Hotel be able to tie it into the show in a singular direction ? Will own a bull in their midst make some of the hotel ’s more unusual resident pull back on their more destructive drug abuse , or will Lowe pick up his own grim frailty ? Why does the alarum clock in Room 64 go off at 2:25 every day ? Was this the most obvious role of “ Hotel California ” that has ever been seen in any form of media , ever ? How can we get a way hidden behind a false wall that ’s fox out with candy dispensers and video game ?
Some of these questions may be unveil . Others ( like that last one ) will likely leave us wondering . We will tune up in next week to see if the plot of land does anything other than help a new occasion for another fab turnout for Lady Gaga … and to see if anyone can top this line , turn in dry as a weather reputation : “ Our dupe ’s eyeballs are in the ashtray . ” We ’re not sold yet on Hotel . But we ’re intrigue .
