Alex Rodriguezhas cut back on his red meat intake.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE tied to hispartnershipwithLysol, theformer New York Yankees player, 48, opens up about recent changes he has made to how he eats.

“The biggest thing I’ve done for my diet is I used to eat meat like steak probably eight out of 10 days, and now I’ve cut it to one or two days out of 10,” Rodriguez says.

Elsewhere, the athlete notes that he has “been doing the same exercise routine now for a couple of years,” which he says includes “getting to the gym six or seven days a week, just to break a sweat every day — nothing too crazy.”

“I try to mix in a little yoga here and there, and some meditation, and then I incorporate a 40-minute walk before I go to bed,” the father of two adds. “That’s also been very helpful.”

Back in October, Rodriguez appeared onThe Jennifer Hudson Show, where he spoke with hostJennifer Hudsonabout a recent30-lb. weight loss.

Noting that he was “so stressed” with work and travel between Los Angeles and Miami that he “started gaining some weight,” the former athlete admitted, “I wasn’t focusing on my health as much."

Rodriguez said he turned things around with the help of his girlfriend — fitness instructorJaclyn Cordeiro— who told him: “You gotta get yourself in better shape.”

“I just changed my routine,” Rodriguez further explained. “I get up in the morning and I don’t look at my phone until noon. So from the time I wake up, I’m in the gym at 8, work out for a couple of hours, come home, do a little sauna, a little steam, stretch, meditate, and then I’m at my desk every day from 12 to 6.”
