Severian is a Runewriter , a sorcerous shapeshifter who helps keep his city safe from demonic aberrants . But when an experimental spell taints his body with aberrant deception , Severian must bank on the one someone he never expected to : his deaf best friend , who must leave home and speak for him — and discover to speak for herself as well .
Shazzbaa Bennett ’s Runewriters open on lifelong friends Severian and Tareth . Magical Severian is hotheaded , relish his position as Runewriter as he fights off the freakish brute known as aberrant . Tareth , on the other hand , is observant and thoughtful . Thanks to her disability , her kin has sheltered her , hardly letting her out of the mansion without Severian at her side . Few multitude in the city have bothered to larn the signaling speech communication Tareth uses to communicate , and although she sleep together how to talk , she seldom does so except in front of Severian and her own family members . But Tareth has become an adept lip reader , and she ’s aware that multitude tend to lowball her intelligence .
Severian crosses paths with a new aberrant just as a crew of deviant hunters has marched into town . The Agorath Order is a fundamentalist grouping of demon hunters , give to eradicating any aberrant contamination from the world . When Severian takes the shape of an aberrant to fight the devil , he finds that he ca n’t completely shift back to his reliable soma . His hands have turned to tentacle ; his feet have become clawed and monstrous and he ’s pick up a gaunt stern . Now the Agorath Order is convince that Severian is turning into an aberrant himself .
Severian ca n’t disembarrass himself of the aberrant contamination on his own , and decide to leave alone the city to find another Runewriter , one who might be able to restore his human form . But pass on that every aberrant hunter wants to kill Severian on sight , Tareth insist on going with him , leaving her rest home for the first prison term .
Bennett also runs the diary comicToday Nothing Happened , which shows off her talent for capturing dialogue . In Runewriters , she displays a wider range of acquirement : her character design , her food colouring , and her ability to build a mystery . Why Severian ’s runecasting went haywire is n’t the only question the funny asks ; there are some dark secrets buried in the Agorath Order as well . But I suspect the most fascinating view of Runewriters will be watching Tareth come up into her own as she tardily grows from the miss everyone protected to a woman who can confront down demons and mages with the increasingly steady speech sound of her voice .
